The USSR Navy during the Cold War was one of the most important components of the Armed Forces. Its development began actively after World War II, when the Soviet Union sought to match the naval power of the United States and its allies. Particular attention was paid to submarine forces. Large surface ships were also built - missile cruisers, destroyers, anti-submarine ships and aircraft-carrying cruisers.
The uniform of Soviet sailors during the Cold War remained classic and recognizable - a black tunic or vest with a white and blue stripe, a cap or visorless hat with the name of the fleet on the ribbon. Officers wore caps and dress uniforms with yellow shoulder straps and buttons. The marines had black berets with a red star, which emphasized their elite status. The symbolism of the fleet was a red flag with a sickle, hammer and star, which emphasized belonging to the USSR.
The uniform and insignia served not only as a practical form, but also as a powerful symbol of belonging to one of the strongest navies in the world.
The main task of the Navy was to ensure the protection of the maritime borders of the Soviet Union and control over strategically important areas of the World Ocean. The fleet was on combat duty in the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean and other key points, demonstrating the military presence of the USSR in the world.
In addition to strategic tasks, responsibilities included protecting sea routes, countering enemy aircraft and submarines, escorting convoys, landing marines, as well as reconnaissance and support for ground forces operations. The Navy had its own marines and aviation, which allowed it to conduct complex operations at sea and on land.
Thus, during the Cold War, the Soviet Navy turned into a global force that was supposed to ensure military balance with enemies and maintain the USSR\'s status as a superpower.
