Bronze medal authorized by Pope Gregory XVI and awarded to Austrian soldiers that suppressed the uprising inspired by Italian patriot Ciro Menotti (see Brambilla, Alessandro. Le Medaglie Italiane Negli Ultimi200 Anni,Vol. 1 1784-1900(1997) p. 149).Starting in the Duchy of Modena, the revolt spread to the Papal territories of Bologna, Ferrara, Ravenna, Forli and beyond.With the assistance of the Austrian army, the uprising was crushed and Menotti was captured and executed.
