Knife bayonet for use on the 11.15 mm. (.43 caliber) Mauser Gewehr 71/84 repeating rifle. Venezuela acquired 27,000 of the Gewehr 71/84 in 1900.This bayonet is patterned closely on the Belgian M1889 bayonet. It was developed by Fabrique Nationale (FN) in the mid-1890s when FN produced Spanish Mauser rifles for Brazil and Uruguay. Originally made with a hooked quillon, many (such as this example) subsequently had the quillon removed.FN offered customers both leather or steel scabbard options, this being an example of the steel scabbard. Uruguay used the leather scabbard with their version of this FN bayonet.Like the M1871/84 rifle, these bayonets exhibit some of the finest workmanship to be found on a military weapon.
