Verner’s 19th Century cavalry military sketching board and leather bag. The board is 175mm in height by a width of 245mm. The compass is 30mm in diameter. A small section of the original contour map of a battlefield is still attached. The timber is probably boxwood and all of the metal fittings appear to be brass. This version of the sketching board was patented by W Verner in 1887. The board was attached to the horseman’s arm holding the reins by the leather strap on the rear. There is a compass at the top of the board and the rider could move his arm about to lineup the compass correctly. The board comes with its leather carrying bag, parts of which require some stitching. The flap has come away from the top. The bag is rare.
