Item Description
This is an incredibly rare historical piece: a commemorative program or booklet titled \"The Burial of the Unknown Soldier\" from November 11, 1921, labeled as part of The Wanamaker Collection. [1]Historical Context
- The Event: On November 11, 1921 (the third anniversary of Armistice Day), the United States held a massive national ceremony to bury an unidentified American World War I soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, officially creating the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. [1, 2]
- The Wanamaker Connection: Rodman Wanamaker (son of department store magnate John Wanamaker) was a major philanthropist and historical preservationist who financed the famous Wanamaker Expeditions. These expeditions documented Native American culture and leaders. During the actual 1921 burial ceremony, the celebrated Crow Nation chief, Chief Plenty Coups, was invited to speak and placed his war bonnet and coup stick upon the casket as a tribute. [1, 2]
- The Collection: Because Wanamaker\'s team heavily documented this event—particularly the participation of Native American leaders—this booklet was published as a companion piece or official record of the proceedings. A large portion of the physical Wanamaker Collection and its photographs are preserved at Indiana University today. [1]
