Firstmanufactured in 1886, the Lebel was used well into WWI. Originally the bladewas 20 1/2 inches long. Many were shortened due to breakage in battle so thereare many blade lengths from being retipped. During the 1930s the Lebel was\" modernized\" reducing the length to be more comparable to newdesigns and reduce weight. A few made it to WWII and some were captured by theGermans and further modified for use on German rifles.
