The medal was established as a civilian labor award by Decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on Jan 18, 1974 and was awarded to recognize many years of hard work in the national economy, the sciences, culture, healthcare, education, government agencies and public organizations. It was given to farmers, workers and employees who reached seniority for a pension or retirement age.
The Medal "Veteran of Labour" was designed by artist SA Pomansky. It is 34mm in diameter circular medal struck from tombacand then silver-plated and oxidised.
