A superb example of a
World War Two Royal Navy
Supply Reserve Depot
Salt Glazed Rum Jar
for the 'Grog' issue to enlisted ratings
Dated 1945Somewhat larger than the similar Officer's version,
this attractive & somewhat heavy jar measures
approx. 12" in height & 6.5" across the bottom. With the legendSRD in black
(often coined as 'Seldom Reaching Destination')
on the jar's collar,
the manufacturer's name is similarly stamped in black
on the bottom:
PEARSON & Co CHESTERFIELD Ltd
THE POTTERIESWHITTINGTON MOOR2CHESTERFIELDIn 1939 The Oldfield Pottery merged with Pearson & Co to
consolidate their pottery business at Whittington Moor
and, often referred to as
'The Whittington Pottery'
gave over half its factory space to the making of artillery shells,
whilst the remainder was used to recrate its famous
WW-II glazed Army rum ration jarsfor the Royal Navy.
The daily Naval issue of 'Grog' (part water, part rum), began in the
18th centuryas a way of making water on-board RN vessels,
(often rancid due to its long-time storage),
more palatable and the Enlisted Ratings were given a daily tot,
a practice that continued in the Royal Navy
until it was stopped in August 1970.A fabulous World War Two Royal Navy example of the famous
WW-I British Troops-issue SRD rum jar.

A cracking piece of WW-II Royal Naval-issued kit..
