Item Description
The Order of the Red Banner of the Azerbaijan SSR was established in 1920 as the first republican combat order, intended to recognize meritorious service in the defense of the young Soviet republic; its design resembled that of the RSFSR Order of the Red Banner, albeit with the addition of distinct national elements.**History of Creation**Following the establishment of Soviet power in the Azerbaijan SSR in April 1920, a need arose to create new state awards to replace the insignia of pre-revolutionary orders and medals. On the initiative of the Azerbaijan Revolutionary Committee, the Order of the "Red Banner" was approved as the republic's primary combat decoration. The design for the order was developed by Ibrahim Aga oglu Vekilov, Head of the Military-Topographical Section within the Operations and Mobilization Department of the Headquarters of the People's Commissariat for Military and Naval Affairs of the AzSSR.**Appearance**The order was oval in shape and crafted from silver and gilded enamel, measuring approximately 5 × 4.5 cm. Its central element was a red five-pointed star, partially obscured from above by a red banner. Positioned beneath the star were a rifle bayonet, a hammer, and a plow. To provide a national flair, a red crescent was added to the star, while the motto "Proletarians of all countries, unite!"—inscribed on the banner—was rendered in the Azerbaijani language using the Arabic script. The reverse side of the order featured an engraving detailing the recipient's surname, official position, date of award, and the order's serial number.**Awards**The first recipient of this order was Mikhail Grigorievich Efremov; in total, only 21 awards of this order are known to have been conferred. Among those decorated were commanders of the Azerbaijani Red Army, participants in the suppression of anti-Soviet uprisings, and active figures within the revolutionary movement. Some awards were also conferred upon civilians who demonstrated outstanding merit in the construction and defense of the republic. The Order of the Red Banner of Labor of the AzSSRSubsequently, in 1921, a labor-oriented variant of the order was established—the "Order of the Red Banner of Labor of the AzSSR"—to recognize achievements in the spheres of labor, industry, and education. This order was also crafted from silver with gilding and red enamel; it featured an image of the hammer and sickle—symbols of labor—and incorporated elements of the republic's coat of arms. Awards of this labor order continued until the end of 1933, with a total of approximately 300 awards conferred.SignificanceThe Order of the Red Banner of the Azerbaijani SSR symbolized the alignment of the Soviet republic's military-political objectives with the broader Soviet system of awards. Furthermore, its design reflected a fusion of all-Union and national motifs, thereby underscoring the local government's enduring connection to the policies of the Soviet Union. Thus, the order played a pivotal role both in recognizing combat merits and in projecting the ideological and artistic identity of the Azerbaijani SSR.COPYMade in Ukraine R-Znak
