CERBERUS GALLERY — RESEARCHED MILITARY ARCHIVESCAPTAIN ERNST E. CHENOWETH (1874–1942)
139th Field Artillery | Indiana National Guard | A.E.F.Offered is a researched 13-object WWI military and fraternal archive associated with Captain Ernst Elihu Chenoweth of Winchester, Indiana. The collection includes named military identification tags, a personalized Masonic token, a 1913 gold-marked shooting medal, officer insignia, and associated artifacts.Presented in a Riker display case with an illustrated Cerberus Gallery Research & Provenance Dossier.MILITARY HISTORYChenoweth was a longtime Indiana National Guard officer who commanded Company F, served as regimental adjutant of the 4th Indiana Infantry, and graduated from the Fort Sill School of Fire in 1918.During WWI, he commanded Battery B, 139th Field Artillery. He sailed aboard the Aquitania on October 2, 1918, and transferred to the Inspector's Department at Camp Pontanezen, France, on December 13, 1918. He returned aboard the Pretoria in April 1919.PERSONALIZED MASONIC TOKENA particularly significant artifact is a Royal Arch Masonic Mark Master penny from Randolph Chapter No. 35, Winchester, Indiana. The token bears the initials E E C on its central keystone, matching Ernst E. Chenoweth.A 1914 Randolph County biography independently documents Chenoweth's Masonic affiliations, including his association with the local Chapter and Council. The matching initials, location, and contemporary biography provide a high-confidence personal attribution, although the individual chapter membership register has not been examined.CIVILIAN LIFE & FAMILYChenoweth was also a prominent Winchester attorney, educator, and public official. He served as Randolph County prosecuting attorney and participated in a documented 1912 murder prosecution. During a contested election, a judge reportedly determined that Chenoweth and his opponent had each received exactly 2,240 votes. He was married to Cora Belle Stapleton Chenoweth, identified in his military transport records.Following WWI, Chenoweth returned to civilian life. In February 1920, he was appointed superintendent of Indiana's state Farm Colony at Butlerville. His biography connects military service, law, politics, education, family, and Freemasonry in early twentieth-century Indiana.1913 GOLD-MARKED SHOOTING MEDALThe archive includes a distinctive 1913 regimental shooting medal with a cross-form design, enameled target, and suspension marked REGIMENTAL.The reverse bears DYER IND'PLS and SOLID GOLD, consistent with Indianapolis manufacturing jeweler C. B. Dyer Inc.The medal weighs approximately 8.5–8.6 grams, including fittings. XRF testing indicates approximately 9-karat gold. The original recipient has not been conclusively identified. The medal is offered as an associated historical artifact, not a proven personal award to Chenoweth.COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS- Two named 139th Field Artillery identification tags
