Antique WWI French "Aux Héros" Commemorative Medal by Albert MayeurUp for sale is an authentic, original French World War I commemorative medal designed by the noted sculptor and engraver Albert Mayeur. This piece serves as a somber tribute to the heavy fighting and immense sacrifices along the Western Front in the Artois sector of northern France.Design Details:

• Obverse: Features a striking full-length winged figure of Victory with arms upraised. To the right is the bold inscription "AUX HÉROS" (To the Heroes). Along the sides, it exhaustively lists the bloody battlefields of the Artois campaign: Carency, Ablain, Neuville, Souchez, Lorette, Vimy, Avion, Liévin, Lens, and Loos.
• Reverse: Depicts a ruined, war-torn landscape showing the silhouette of a destroyed church tower (likely the basilica at Notre-Dame de Lorette) under a radiant sun. It features the haunting Latin phrase "SUNT LACRYMÆ RERUM" (taken from Virgil's Aeneid, meaning "There are tears for things" or "The world is full of weeping"), alongside the wartime dates "1914-1918".
