Here\'s your chance to own a fantastic and unique ID\'d World War II US Army grouping from the famed 29th Infantry Division.
I collected militaria for many years but stopped about 10 years ago and the only 3-4 things I have left are my favorite and best. Now I am older and its time to pass it on to someone else and preserve this grouping for the future. I bought this from a good friend and veteran collector about 20-plus years ago and I have owned it since and never offered it to anyone. The previous owner bought it directly from the vet\'s family. This grouping was worn and used by Corporal Chester Runion. He was with Company M of the 175th Infantry of the 29th Infantry Division. The Ike jacket is all original and complete and shows he earned a Bronze Star and TWO Purple Hearts. He was in combat during the Battle of the Bulge and several pieces in this collection PROVE that.
Lot includes his dress jacket with original ribbons, French Croix de Guerre Fourragere shoulder cord, and Combat Infantry Badge, army shirt and pants, M41 jacket, combat helmet, 2 overseas caps that are vastly different in size, four photos of Mr. Runion, citation for serving in combat, an autograph book signed by about 10 members of his unit during the Battle of the Bulge, a copy of a form granting Corporal Runion permission to keep a pistol, and three large paper pieces related to the 29th.
More details on key pieces:
-- Dress jacket: Size 36R Ike jacket has all original components including Combat Infantry Badge and ribbons, including Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts and three European campaign stars. Also has ruptured duck and overseas stripes. A qualification award for carbine is also attached to the jacket. It flipped over in the photos and we did not realize that until now. There is no name anywhere that we see. Jacket tags are dated mid-1944. PLEASE NOTE in the photos the Ike jacket is shown with a tie and an Army dress shirt. The tie and dress shirt were NOT Mr. Runions! They were used in a nice mannequin display. They will be included, but again, they did NOT belong to this veteran.
-- Helmet: Shows a lot of use with heavily stained chin straps. Top of helmet has three small dents. Inside shows a lot of use and corrosion and staining. Nape strap has a name marked on it and then marked out, all in old faded ink.
-- M41 jacket is size 34 and has had the sleeves shortened and hemmed. One side of the zipper has a period replacement repair. One arm of the jacket has a hole in it. A nice photo is included in this lot that shows the veteran wearing a helmet and M41 jacket. Are these the exact some ones he\'s wearing in the photo? We can\'t tell for sure, when you enlarge the photo you lose quality. So it might be, but we can\'t tell for sure. We do know for sure, they came from his family and were his, and the photo did too.-- Small autograph book: The BEST part of the grouping, in our opinion! This is signed by about 10 members of his squad and some of them included their home addresses. Some of the notes are hilarious and some of them prove they are in combat during the Battle of the Bulge (which was Dec. 16 to Jan. 25) Some examples: - \"The potato masher kid\" (referring to German grenades) - \"Some place in Germany, December 23 -- 1944 (during the Battle of the Bulge) - \"Some where in Germany, the kid that always run for the hole when shell were comeing.\"
-\"Remember me when we go tredding through Germany + dodge those 88s as they come buzzing over head.\" (German artillery) -\"Remember Jack the looter.\" -\"Germany 12-23-44, Two days before Christmas in one of Jerry\'s own.\" (German fox hole)
-- Photos: Four COPIES of photos of Mr. Runion provided by the family member. Again, these are COPIES, not the originals. One photo even has \'Chet\', short for Chester, written on it. -- Certificate of Merit for European Theatre of Operations: This document is ORIGINAL and came from the family. It has been trimmed slightly to fit in an 8x10 frame. This document is very important because Mr. Runion\'s name is typed on it and it clearly says, \"The high standard of courage and discipline required during long periods of combat were met by Corporal Runion in a manner that reflects great credit upon himself and the Military service.\" It is signed by William C. Purnell, the Commanding Colonel of the 175th Infantry Division. The family member who sold this said the veteran was a bazooka man. The one photo of him in combat shows him with a piece of equipment we can\'t identify, possible a German piece? The family member also said his two Purple Hearts came from: 1-schrapnel at the Bulge; 2-Getting shot in the hand in Germany.Add $40 for Fed Ex ground shipping as this takes a VERY LARGE heavy box. Signature will be required on delivery.
I have gone to great lengths to describe this honestly, fairly and accurately in words and 24 photos, and will take a lot of money from me as their cut, so NO REFUNDS will be accepted.
