His Elite Combat Unit & Tragic Battlefield Narrative
The Unit: Born in 1923 in Belarus, Shumay served as a Red Army frontline combat radioman in the 1108th Rifle Regiment, 331st Rifle Division (3rd Belorussian Front). Radiomen carried heavy equipment on their backs and had to maintain vital communication links right on the cutting edge of the assault into Germany.
The Sacrifice at Goldap (October 22, 1944): During the ferocious, meat-grinder battles pushing across the border into Goldap, East Prussia, Shumay was caught in a brutal German artillery counter-barrage. A heavy shell fragment tore directly through his right leg.
The War is Over: He was rushed to a field hospital where doctors had to perform a high amputation of his right thigh stump to save his life. The war ended right there for him. He returned home to Orsha, Belarus, as a severely disabled veteran (Group 2 invalid) and took up work as a post-war communications bookkeeper.
The Awards: Because of his extreme sacrifice, his hometown draft board petitioned the military command after the war, securing him Four Frontline Combat Decorations in the official master archives: the elite Medal "For Courage", dual Medals "For Battle Merit", and dual Victory over Germany Medals. Decades later, he was elevated to the highest possible veteran rank, receiving the prestigious silver-and-enamel Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class for his lifelong sacrifice.
