Ames Civil War Model 1860 Cavalry Sword with Scabbard. The ricasso is marked \"Ames Mfg. Co.\", \"Chicopee\", \"Mass\", and on the reverse is \"1860.\". The grip, guard and pommel are all tight. The grip leather is 95% complete. The twisted wire is 100% complete. One branch of the knuckleguard is cracked, doesn\'t move unless you move it. The blade is straight, unsharpened, a couple nicks, the tip is a little sharp, has a few scabbard on/off scratches, and has a darkened patina. The scabbard is solid with a few dents on the lower third, and it has pitting throughout. Leather washer is intact. Length of the blade is 34 7/8\" (1 1/16\" wide and 5/16\" thick), the sword is 40 7/8\", and in the scabbard it is 42 5/8\".
Likely 1 of the 1200 sent south prior to the war. According to Thillmanns book, the early pieces sent down lacked the US and inspector marks on the ricasso.
