Original 1945 Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Social Security Pamphlet
Offered is an original November 1945 United States government pamphlet titled Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance.
The illustrated front cover reads:
Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance
Insurance for Workers and Their Families
Federal Security Agency
Social Security Board
The attractive dark-green and cream cover features a period illustration of Uncle Sam presenting an insurance certificate to a worker and his family.
The rear cover identifies the publication as:
I. S. C. 35
November 1945
U. S. Government Printing Office 1945
This pamphlet was issued by the Social Security Board under the Federal Security Agency to explain the federal old-age and survivors insurance system to American workers and their families.
The contents discuss covered employment, employee contributions, average monthly wages, retirement benefits, survivor benefits, widows and children, dependent parents, lump-sum death benefits and the calculation of monthly payments.
One illustrated interior example explains benefits for a worker averaging 50 dollars per month over nine years and shows estimated retirement and survivor payments.
This is an authentic period government publication and not a modern reproduction. The November 1945 date, I. S. C. 35 publication number, U. S. Government Printing Office imprint, aged paper, period typography, Uncle Sam artwork and original staple-bound construction are all visible.
The pamphlet measures approximately 3 3/4 inches wide by just under 8 inches tall. Please refer to the photographs and exact measurements provided.
Printed paper wrappers with saddle-stapled binding. No dust jacket was issued. No individual author, ISBN, UPC or personal copyright notice appears.
No handwritten signature, inscription, ownership name, library stamp, dealer sticker or price notation is visible. The calculations shown inside appear to be part of the original printed design and are not handwritten.
Condition
Very Good vintage condition for an approximately 80-year-old government pamphlet.
The illustrated front cover retains strong dark-green color, clear cream lettering and an attractive Uncle Sam image.
Visible flaws include a small chip or paper loss at the upper-right corner, light edge and corner wear, minor rubbing, slight age-related waviness and light surface soiling.
The rear cover has overall age toning, light scattered soiling, a few tiny marks, mild edge wear and darker wear along portions of the right edge. The November 1945 and government-printing information remain clear and readable.
The interior pages show uniform age toning but remain legible. No major interior tears, detached pages, highlighting, underlining, library markings, tape, severe staining, mold or obvious insect damage are visible in the supplied photographs.
The staple-bound structure appears intact, although the staples are not shown closely enough to determine whether minor age-related oxidation is present.
Please examine all photographs carefully because they are an important part of the condition description, especially the upper-right cover chip, rear-cover wear and interior pages.
This is a desirable piece of American government and social-welfare history for collectors of Social Security memorabilia, New Deal programs, Uncle Sam imagery, labor history, retirement history, insurance history, Federal Security Agency material, World War II and postwar ephemera and U.S. Government Printing Office publications.
An especially interesting collecting point is that this pamphlet was issued by the Social Security Board shortly before that organization was replaced by the Social Security Administration in 1946.
The pamphlet will be placed in a protective sleeve and shipped flat between rigid backing boards.
