This is an embroidered patch for Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois, home of Recruit Training Command and known across the fleet as the Quarterdeck of the Navy.
President Taft dedicated the station on Lake Michigan in 1911. Roughly 125,000 recruits trained there in World War I and more than a million in World War II, and the Golden Thirteen, the first Black officers in the Navy, came out of Great Lakes in 1944. Since 1996 it has been the Navy's only boot camp.
The patch measures 4 by 4 inches, round, with a blue merrowed edge and iron-on backing.
Add it to a shadow box with your boot camp division photo, or give it to the family of a new sailor heading for the fleet.
