This is a Marine Corps Shellback patch, with King Neptune, his trident and two mermaids above the words ANCIENT ORDER OF THE DEEP.
Marines who sail south on Navy ships go through the crossing the line ceremony with the crew, starting the day as pollywogs and ending it as Shellbacks before King Neptune and his court. Folklorist Keith Richardson traced the main elements of the ceremony to the 1500s, long before the US Navy existed. New Shellbacks receive a certificate and a smaller card that records the crossing.
It measures 4.5 by 3.25 inches, with a merrowed edge and iron-on backing, and it can also be sewn on.
Mount it in a shadow box beside your Shellback certificate, or sew it on a jacket or vest for your next reunion.
