Joseph Stalin1, born December 18, 18782 in Gori (Russian Empire, present-day Georgia) and died March 5, 1953 in Moscow, was a Bolshevik revolutionary and Soviet statesman of Georgian origin. He led the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from the late 1920s until his death, establishing a regime of absolute personal dictatorship3. Historians consider him responsible, to varying degrees, for the deaths of three to more than twenty million people4.
Born Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, nicknamed Sosso (short for Iossef or Iosseb) during his childhood, he was then called Koba (after a Georgian folk hero) by his close friends and in his first years of clandestine activism within the Social Democratic Workers\' Party of Russia (RSDLP), which he joined in 1898. He then uses the pseudonym Stalin, formed from the Russian word сталь (stal), which means steel.
