In 1934, in order to help workers better master military‑sanitary knowledge, the ‘Ready for Sanitary Defense of the USSR’ (GSO) program was introduced, and the GSO 1st‑Class badge was established for the adult population. For Pioneers and schoolchildren, the ‘Be Ready for Sanitary Defense of the USSR’ (BGSO) program and its corresponding badge were created. Later, in 1935, the GSO 2nd‑Class badge was approved for those who passed the more difficult standards.
Production of all GSO and BGSO badges ceased with the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
In the postwar years, production resumed in the form of rhombus‑shaped badges. The class levels of the GSO program were abolished. A large number of variants exist, differing in execution.
