Interesting documented Soviet Northern Fleet submarine grouping awarded to Naval Warrant Officer Aleksandr Mikhailovich Pivnenko, consisting of his 1987 Medal for Impeccable Service, 3rd Class booklet and 1991 Medal for Distinction in Military Service, 2nd Class booklet. The 1987 document identifies Pivnenko with Military Unit 70089-A, the second crew associated with K-137 Leninets, the lead Project 667A “Yankee”-class nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarine. The 1991 award document was signed by Vyacheslav Alekseyevich Popov, who had previously commanded K-137 and later became commander of the Northern Fleet during the August 2000 sinking of the submarine Kursk. Although the document predates and has no direct connection to the Kursk disaster, Popov’s signature provides a noteworthy association with one of the most consequential events in modern Russian naval history.
