Soviet Medal for theLiberation of Warsaw, Variation 3 (Veteran’s Issue, a so-called “Voenkomat”version), circa 1960s-70s.
This is a GUARANTEED ORIGINAL Soviet WW2 medal made at the SovietMint after the war and belatedly awarded to a participant of the battle for thePolish capital of Warsaw, a part of the massive Soviet Vistula – Oder offensivethat unfolded in January 1945.
The medallion is in brass; measures 36.9 mm in height includingthe eyelet, 32.0 mm wide; weighs 15.0 g not including the suspension andconnecting link. The rounded eyelet and the main portion of the medallion arestruck as a single piece - unlike the early Variation 1 that has a separateeyelet soldered to the medallion or Variation 2 that has a flat eyelet.
This medal is one of the post-war issues that were typicallyawarded by a Voenkomat (Military Commissariat) at the veteran's place ofresidence. The reasons for the late issue could vary, but in most instances,"Voenkomat" medals were "catch-up" awards to people whotook part in the campaign and then somehow got overlooked by the awardingauthorities in the immediate post-war years. The “Voenkomat” version of theLiberation of Warsaw Medal is quite scarce, definitely harder to find that theVariation 2 from the late 1940s and at least on par with the Variation 1.
The medal is in SUPERB CONDITION. The raised details areabsolutely perfect and crisp. There is no wear visible even under a 10xmagnification. The original “gilt” mint luster is extremely well-preserved andbright, and shows only a very mild tarnish on the reverse that adds character,no significant oxidation. The medal comes on an ORIGINAL BRASS suspension witha perfectly preserved, clean old ribbon. The connecting link appears to beoriginal as well, and its ends are still joined with solder.
