The Patronage Service of the “Tymur” Special Unit under the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine (GUR MO) is an internal support division dedicated to providing comprehensive care for service members and their families, operating under established military patronage frameworks.
Because the “Tymur” Special Unit executes high-risk special operations across active frontlines, its dedicated patronage service relieves commanders and operators of administrative, medical, and social burdens by managing backend logistics and care.
Core Responsibilities & Directives
Medical Support & Rehabilitation: Coordinating casualty evacuation, managing treatment for severely wounded personnel in military and civilian medical facilities, supervising pharmaceutical supplies, and arranging physical and psychological rehabilitation (including overseas treatment).
Legal & Administrative Assistance: Assisting with documentation for Combatant Status (UBD), injury compensation claims, Military Medical Boards (VVK), and Medical-Social Expert Commissions (MSEK) to streamline military bureaucracy.
Support for Families of Fallen & Missing-in-Action (MIA) Personnel: Delivering social, legal, and psychological care to families of fallen soldiers, assisting in search efforts for MIA service members, and coordinating repatriation and memorial services.
POW Care & Reintegration: Facilitating the reception and immediate medical and psychological triage of servicemen returned through prisoner exchanges, as well as supporting their long-term recovery and document restoration.
Operational Principles & Structure
The Patronage Service operates on a peer-to-peer approach using individual case management:
Dedicated Case Manager: Each wounded operator or family of a fallen/MIA service member is assigned a personal coordinator who manages their case from onset to full resolution.
Direct Coordination with Command: The service liaises directly with the commander of the “Tymur” Special Unit and broader GUR MO leadership to bypass bureaucratic delays.
Civilian & Volunteer Collaboration: Partnering with charitable foundations and non-profits to secure non-budgetary funding for complex surgeries, specialized rehabilitation programs, prosthetics, and direct financial aid.
Terminology note: In Ukrainian military contexts, \"Patronage Service\" (Патронатна служба) specifically refers to casualty assistance, family support, and medical-legal advocacy divisions within elite military units.
